Fangrrrl
2024
Fangrrrl is a web-based adventure game that explores the fangirl experience and what happens when we examine the perception of fangirl culture. Depending on who you are, your viewpoint on fangirls may be different. From the outsider’s perspective, fangirls are often seen in a derogatory light and portrayed as hysterical, obsessed girls. Yet, as a fangirl, many would agree that it is a way of life that allows them to enjoy their media and interests of choice on a deeper level whilst building community and a sense of self.
Fangrrrl strives to create a user experience where people can immerse themselves in the all-consuming world of fandom and the society of fangirls. Playing as the main character who is new to this world, the user can learn about being a fangirl from the bottom up by learning about the societal phenomenon of fangirl culture, maybe making friends along the way, and perhaps some enemies.
For all of my life, I have considered myself to be a fangirl; I have never liked anything in a “normal” way. Being a fangirl is one of the biggest parts of my identity—it has sparked most of my closest and greatest friendships, comprises a lot of my core memories, and ultimately brings me joy. However, it is a part of my identity that I have learned to conceal in hopes of being taken more seriously. With this project, I wanted to embrace that part of my identity, create something that my younger self would have appreciated growing up, and most importantly, shine a light on a huge part of our society that is readily dismissed.
Fangrrrl pays homage to my oldest memories as a fangirl. The project’s aesthetic is derived from the 2000s cyber world, and the gameplay follows common early Internet game structures. Intended for all ages, this project aims to deliver messages of celebration, acceptance, and reflection through a plot-driven experience with minigames.
